Ichthyol ointment contains the active ingredient ichthyol, which has other names: Ammonium bituminosulfonate or ammonium bituminosulphonate (synonyms of ichthammol, CAS#8029-68-3 brand name: Ichthyol). It is a product of natural origin obtained in the first step by dry distillation of rich oil shale, then sulfonating the resulting oil (or purified parts thereof), and finally modifying the product with ammonia. It is used in medicine as a treatment for many skin diseases.
Indications of Ichthyol (Ichthammol Ointment Veterinary):
Ichthyol has anti-inflammatory, bactericidal, and antifungal properties. It can be used to treat a variety of skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, as it reduces microorganisms. In contrast, it does not have any corrosive properties on the skin. It is also used in cases of superficial skin infections and abscesses in various animals.
Usage and dosage for Ichthyol (Ichthammol Ointment Veterinary):
The infected place is washed with warm water and then dried well and ointment is applied twice a day. the treatment continues until recovery. It is suitable for most animals including cats, dogs, horses, goats, sheep, and cows.
Withdrawal Period:
The European Medicines Agency published a summary report on ichthyol substances (synonym: bitumen sulfonate) during the European MRL procedure in veterinary medicine. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP) decided that due to good tolerability and safety, there is no need to set maximum residue limits for ichthyol substances. As a result, ichthyol substances can be applied topically to all food-producing animal species without restrictions.
